Hangul Proclamation Day

Hangul Day is Korean national commemorative day celebrating invention of Hangul.

Because King Sejong the Great proclaimed “Hunmin Jeongeum” in lunar calendar Sep. 1446,

Hangul Day was declared as a national commemoration day to be marked on October 9^th.

Various events about Hangul, such as composition, or calligraphy contests,
are held around Hangul day in Korea.
Our center also has a event of Korean Calligraphy experience on October 10^th!!

Seoul Global Center to open in January

In accordance with the "Strategies and Plans for the Globalization of Seoul" unveiled in July, the Seoul Metropolitan Government will open the "Seoul Global Center," a one-stop administrative service center that will provide various administrative, business, and cultural support as well as living services for international residents in Seoul.

The Seoul Global Center, to be located on the 3rd floor of the Press Center near Seoul City Hall and staffed with some 30 experts, will be officially open to the public in January 15, 2008.

The Seoul Global Center will run its hotline number (1688-0120) and the website at http://global.seoul.go.kr (It will be open in January 2008.)

The Seoul Global Center will offer services regarding immigration affairs, foreign driver’s license (issued by the countries that recognize a Korean license), international marriage certificate, tax and consumer consulting, and tourism information. (Currently 127 countries recognize a Korean license. Please refer to Driver's License Agency (http://www.dla.go.kr/english/index.jsp) for more information.)

Global investors wishing to invest in Seoul will also enjoy a variety of support activities including all the information and consulting service provided fully by the Seoul Global Center and will gain more efficient and competitive edges in doing their businesses from making investment to setting up a company in Seoul.

In addition, the Seoul Global Center plans to run diverse educational and cultural programs including Korean language courses, flea markets, and hand-on Korean cultural experience. It will also actively support foreign community activities such as their own cultural events.

To this end, the Seoul Global Center welcomes volunteer workers for many global cultural activities and expects lots of international residents to join them.

Also, the Seoul Global Center will work actively to promptly solve various problems foreigners experience while living in Seoul area through the network of the Global Village Center being operated in each foreign community.

The Global Village Center operates in five foreign communities in Yeoksam-dong, Hannam-dong, Itaewon-dong, Ichon-dong, Banpo-dong, and Seorae Village. The Global Village Center in the Yeoksam-dong and Yeonnam-dong region is scheduled to open to coincide with the opening of the Seoul Global Center. The Global Village Centers in other areas are also slated to open in April 2008.

In addition, the Seoul Global Center will acknowledge cultural difference and at the same time respect cultural diversity through active communication between foreign workers and Seoul citizens by running a variety of multi-cultural programs including consulting services for foreign workers and marriage-based immigrants.

The Seoul Global Center will play a central role in carrying out the city government’s efforts for the globalization of Seoul, making all foreigners living in Seoul feel at home, providing the latest information on life in Seoul, and responding actively to various inconveniences international residents experience in everyday life.

The 9th annual Seoul Town Meeting will be held on Friday, November 30, 2007 from 13:30-16:00, at Taepyeong Hall, City Hall. All foreign residents are welcome.

Hosted by the Seoul Metropolitan Government (SMG) and organized by the Seoul Help Center for Foreigners, the 9th annual Seoul Town Meeting will provide a good opportunity for expatriates to make suggestions on the quality of life issues in Seoul.

2007 Korea-Japan Festival in Seoul

The Korea-Japan Festival committee is putting on a varied selection of cultural events this weekend between Oct. 20-21 in celebration of the 40th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

Nineteen Japanese and 34 Korean groups will participate in showcasing authentic performances from several regions of Japan and Korea. Venues will be throughout Seoul Plaza in front of Seoul City Hall and Cheonggye Plaza. The highlight of the festival will be a parade on Saturday with 22 performing troupes from both countries participating.

Information Fair 2007, organized by the Seoul Help Center for Foreigners (SHC), is an outdoor orientation open primarily for newly arrived foreign families, but also open to all foreign and local people this year. We invite foreign residents and organizations that are involved in providing services to foreigners to ensure more interaction between both of them.

We will have at least 40 booths in front of the City Hall. We will provide the participating organizations with a parasol table (W70cm x D70cm x H75cm) or a tent for your staffs, two chairs and a table-sized banner to show the name of your organization. The booths will be staffed by representatives of a wide range of organizations including public service providers such as embassies and government bodies, expatriates community associations, international schools and any private service providers to foreigners.

Cooking Class of “Samgyetang” (Korean Chicken Broth with Ginseng)

The Seoul Help Center for Foreigners (SHC) invites foreign residents in Seoul to a cooking class of Samgyetang (Korean chicken broth with ginseng), a famous summer nourishing dish in Korea.

Samgyetang, made with a whole chicken stuffed with ginseng, jujube (Chinese dates), garlic and glutinous rice, may taste plain to some, but it has been Korean’s favorite summer food. As the phrase goes “Beat the heat with heat”, the oriental medical theory says that it is recommended to eat hot dishes made with high-protein ingredients in summer because our inner body actually loses a large quantity of heat and gets cooler as the outer part heats up. Samgyetang is especially good for those who perspire easily and have weak digestive organs. This special cooking class designed for foreign residents will help you understand the Korean culture and way of living as well.
